Campus libraries team up with Google book project
UW-Madison and Google announced an agreement to expand access to hundreds of thousands of public and historical books and documents from more than 7.2 million holdings on campus. The university is the eighth library to join Google's ambitious effort to digitize the world's books and make them searchable on Google Book Search.

University attracts Wisconsin's best
The university has scored a major in-state recruiting coup, attracting the state's largest number of 2006 Wisconsin All-State Scholars. The All-State Scholar Program offers one of Wisconsin's most competitive and prestigious scholarships, honoring the state's top high school seniors.
ASM voting ends Thursday, Oct. 19
Voting is under way now for the ASM fall elections, which will decide student council seats, a living-wage initiative and an initiative to fund a Wisconsin Union facilities improvement plan with higher student fees. Polls close at 6 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 19). Visit the ASM Web site for ballot content and details about polling locations around campus.

Book festival features great variety
From poetry to politics, and from fiction to science, the Wisconsin Book Festival caters to many different interests. Events are taking place around campus and the downtown area today (Wednesday, Oct. 18) through Sunday, Oct. 22.
UHS Health Tip: Two new doctors are in
Brent Nielsen and Jacob Prunuske, both recently hired physicians at University Health Services, want to keep students healthy and active. Prunuske says students "want to do what they want to do, without limitation or pain. We're helping them get the most out of their time, classes and personal relationships."
Halloween Web site details safety tips, events
The university has posted a Web site offering safety tips for students as well as a list of events to choose among during the upcoming Halloween weekend, Friday-Saturday, Oct. 27-28.

World-class pianist plays in Union Theater
Winner of the 2001 Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (the first woman in more than 30 years), Olga Kern has been captivating fans and critics alike with her passionately confident musicianship and vivid stage presence. The program includes Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Mendelssohn. 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, in the Memorial Union Theater. Cost: $34-18 general, $10 UW-Madison students.
Author, social justice advocate Wise to speak
Author and social justice advocate Tim Wise will appear on campus this Thursday, Oct. 19, from 2-3:30 p.m. in the Upper Carson Gulley, Lakeshore Dorms. Wise has spoken in 48 states and at more than 400 universities. His efforts earned him the 2001 British diversity award as well as the praise of world leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
Illumination hosts poetry reading
Illumination will host an undergraduate poetry reading as part of the Wisconsin Book Festival tonight, Oct. 18, at 8 p.m. in the Open Book Cafˇ in College Library. Undergraduates who have been published in the Illumination journal and members of the Illumination staff will read their original poems and short stories. Refreshments will be provided.
Used book sale going on now
The Friends of the Madison Library Used Book Sale continues from now through Saturday, Oct. 21, in 116 Memorial Library. Proceeds from the fundraiser help support the Friends' grants-in-aid program for visiting scholars, a grant program for campus libraries and other programming.

Web site offers general election information
The university has provided a Web site to students with information detailing how to take part in the Nov. 7 election, including how to register and where to vote.
Intramurals: Table tennis tournament
Entries are taken only on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 24 and 25, in the Natatorium Program Office. The single-elimination brackets are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, the entry fee is $2 per person, and the tournament features men's and women's brackets.

Fair lets students shop for majors
The College of Letters and Science, the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and the School of Education will give students a chance to "shop around" for a major at this upcoming fair. Ask questions of career and academic advisers and talk to faculty and upper-class students in each department. 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25, in the Great Hall, Memorial Union.
Explore the Physical Therapy Program
The Physical Therapy Program invites interested students and their families and friends to learn about the program on Saturday, Oct. 21. Sign in from 1-1:30 p.m., hear about the program, and then go on a tour of the facilities and the campus by bus. Starts in 5150 Medical Sciences Center.
