Vote now in ASM's fall election
Dean of Students Lori Berquam encourages all students to play an active role in shared governance by voting in the Associated Students of Madison (ASM) fall elections. All voting takes place online until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18.
UW-Madison recognized by Truman Foundation
For a national scholarship that gives out 75 awards or fewer each year, it is rare for a single university to have two scholars in the same year, says the executive secretary of the Truman Foundation. Yet, when UW-Madison did so earlier this year, Frederick Slabach says he wasn't exactly surprised. It was a sign of the campus's spirit of public service that prompted the foundation to name UW-Madison as one of four "honor institutions" for the academic year.
Senior management changes announced at UHS
Kathleen Poi, who has served as University Health Services (UHS) executive director since July 2001, will retire on Nov. 9. She will be succeeded on an interim basis by Susan Crowley, UHS director of prevention services.

ASM Neighborhood Watch program up and running
As part of a new ASM Neighborhood Watch Program, five-person teams will be walking around designated neighborhoods near campus on Friday and Saturday nights. The teams will look for suspicious behavior and stay in direct contact with the neighborhood officer, helping to make sure that the area is safe. Documenting the story behind Wisconsin's cultural landscapes
Their footprint on the land is distinct and alive with history: defunct company towns, folk schools, massive industrial facades, Depression-era lodges, effigy mounds and churches on the hill. These are the focus of a new preservation effort led by Arnold Alanen, a professor of landscape architecture who volunteers his time to document these important places before they are lost.
Volleyball Badgers will spike cancer
The 10th-ranked volleyball team will do its part to "Spike Cancer" when it hosts third-ranked Penn State. For each fan in attendance, American Transmission Company has pledged to donate $.50 to the Susan G. Komen Madison Affiliate, a group dedicated to advancing research, education, screening and treatment. In addition, fans will receive a pink Wisconsin Volleyball water bottle courtesy of ATC and Coca-Cola, while supplies last.
MBA program ranked for social responsibility, environment
The School of Business is ranked among the world's top schools for leadership in integrating social and environmental issues into its MBA offerings, according to the Aspen Institute's 2007-08 edition of Beyond Grey Pinstripes. The school was ranked 33rd in the world, and 24th in the United States.

List of Homecoming events defies summary
Homecoming this year has it all, from competitions (barge building, tug of war, battle of the air band) to volunteering (food drives, blood drives, charity masquerade ball) and entertainment (fireworks, a parade). The events kick off at noon on Friday, Oct. 19, on Library Mall and culminate in the Homecoming Game against Indiana on Saturday, Oct. 27. The full schedule is available online.
Attend taping of 'Wisconsin Reflections'
Two new tapings are coming up for "Wisconsin Reflections," the television interview program featuring UW-Madison alumni. Produced by University Communications, each program is taped at Vilas Hall in front of a live studio audience and airs on the Big Ten Network. Lecture series brings 'hip-hop intellectual' to campus
The Distinguished Lecture Series brings to campus Michael Eric Dyson, Georgetown University, to address issues of race, gender, commercialism, creativity and politics through the lens of hip-hop as a creative force. The event is free, but tickets are required and are available beginning today, Oct. 17, to students, faculty and staff. 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, Wisconsin Union Theater.
Chazen hosts town hall meeting about planned expansion
All are invited to a town hall meeting to view plans for expansion of the Chazen Museum of Art. Times reporter charts the rise of opinion journalism
Madison native Tobin Harshaw, senior staff editor for the op-ed section of the New York Times and a frequent contributor to the Sunday Review of Books, will speak about the origins and evolution of opinion journalism, background on the separation of news and opinion, and the step-by-step creation of op-ed sections today. 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 976 Memorial Library.
