Chancellor highlights successes, challenges at state-of-the-university address
Despite absorbing one-time cuts and ongoing cuts in the state budget adopted this summer, UW–Madison was able to land on its fiscal feet, Chancellor Biddy Martin told faculty senators during the annual state-of-the-university address on Oct. 5.

Ukrainian National Dance Company performs on campus
A dynamic folk dancing ensemble, the Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company is theatrical and full of energy. Traveling with its signature orchestra, this 85-member company is classically trained and well-versed in Ukrainian folklore. 8 p.m. today (Wednesday), Oct. 14, Wisconsin Union Theater. Lecture describes ‘the indispensable university’
Eugene Trani, Virginia Commonwealth University and former UW–Madison vice president for academic affairs, presents “The Indispensable University: The University of Wisconsin–Madison, Economic Development and the Knowledge Economy.” He will discuss how the distinctiveness of land-grant institutions has progressively eroded during the last 50 years and examine how UW–Madison has modernized the Wisconsin Idea to respond to the economic challenges facing the state. Public meeting to discuss downtown development
The city of Madison’s Department of Planning and Community and Economic Development will hold a public meeting designed to discuss downtown development issues, including downtown living for students and professionals, transportation, culture, entertainment, recreation and sense of place. 3:30–5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, TITU Memorial Union.

Artists may apply to install art at Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery
Artists on campus and across the Midwest are invited to submit an application for the commission of art to be installed in the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. Applications are due by Sunday, Nov. 1, and proposal and application details are available online.
WUD Art Committee Invites submissions for 2010–11 exhibitions
The Wisconsin Union Galleries in partnership with the WUD Art Committee currently seek visual artists for 2010–2011 exhibition dates for its four gallery spaces (Porter Butts, Class of 1925, Lakefront on Langdon, Theater Gallery). Submissions are due by Thursday, Oct. 15.
Represent the university as an information or tour guide
Visitor and Information Programs and the Admissions Office are looking for outgoing and enthusiastic students to represent the university as information guides and tour guides beginning in spring 2010. The offices seek students who reflect the diversity of the campus community. Starting salary is $8 per hour with opportunities for advancement up to $12.
