Regents approve admissions policy

Every applicant who wants to be a student in the University of Wisconsin System will receive a comprehensive, individualized admissions review, a practice long used by UW-Madison, under an updated policy approved last week by the Board of Regents.

Vote in Tuesday's primary

UW-Madison students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in spring elections in Dane County. In Madison, elections will select a mayor, alders and school board members. The primary election will be held Tuesday, Feb. 20. Polls will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Please note that the April 3 general election will be conducted during spring break. If you plan to travel, it is easy to request and vote by absentee ballot. For more information on registration, absentee voting or your polling place, visit http://www.uc.wisc.edu/vote/

Bielema's success earns new compensation package

The Board of Regents approved an amended contract with head football coach Bret Bielema that will increase his compensation package to $1.3 million in the deal's first year. In addition to the compensation increase, the contract was extended an additional year, through Jan. 31, 2012.

Athletics Department celebrates Black History Month

The Athletics Department has created a Web site and new radio commercials by student athletes Janese Banks, Alando Tucker, Paul Hubbard and Chavon Robinson to celebrate Black History Month and to recognize the history of African-American athletes at UW-Madison.

Single-handed fishing kit reels in first place

The Adaptive Fishing Kit, which converts a standard fishing rod and reel so people can use it with only one arm, took the top prize and $10,000 in the 2007 Schoofs Prize for Creativity during the Innovation Days idea and invention competition. With an estimated retail price of $120, the kit provides a means for amputees, stroke victims, or others with injuries or paralysis to enjoy the sport of fishing.

UHS Health Tip: Are you uninsured or underinsured?

Don't get blown off course by the unexpected. SHIP (Student Health Insurance Plan), offered to students through University Health Services (UHS), provides valuable health-care coverage beyond the professional medical and counseling care available at UHS. SHIP members are protected by nationwide coverage for emergency room, hospitalization and other specialized medical services. The spring deadline to enroll is Thursday, Feb. 15.

Morgridge Center celebrates 10th anniversary

The Morgridge Center for Public Service is recognizing its 10th anniversary this spring with a public conference that will highlight university service at the local, state and national levels. The conference runs 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday, March 9, and 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 10, in the Red Gym and Memorial Union. Registration is required by March 1. The cost is $25 for the public, but free to registered UW-Madison students.

Panel discusses impact, future of public radio

This panel will focus on the continuing political and social importance of public media in the 21st century, emphasizing the current political atmosphere and the struggles public radio will have to overcome in the face of new technologies. Three important figures in public radio's past and present will participate in the discussion, including Professor Jack Mitchell; Michael Leland, news director for Wisconsin Public Radio; and Randall Davidson, author of "9XM Talking: WHA Radio and the Wisconsin Idea." 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, TITU Memorial Union.

Cinematheque screens Women's International Film Festival

"Private Eyes," the first of two programs for the MadCat Women's International Film Festival, features an eclectic selection of experimental documentaries and animated works from the UK, Czech Republic, Norway and the United States. 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, Cinematheque, 4070 Vilas. Spoken-word artist Biafra performs in the Union

Feb. 16: Last day for dropped classes tuition adjustment

Friday, Feb. 16, is the last day for 50 percent tuition adjustment on dropped classes, the last day to apply for pass/fail, and the last day to convert from credit to audit for undergraduates and professional and special students.

Illumination journal seeks submissions

llumination is looking for diverse, creative and approachable pieces to publish in print and online. Illumination publishes multiple poems, essays, short stories and art pieces each semester, and a $250 honorarium is provided to one artist, poet and prose writer published. The deadline to submit is Saturday, Feb. 17.

Undergraduate Symposium seeks student proposals

Undergraduate students are invited to share their passion for academic research by participating in the Undergraduate Symposium to be held April 12. All undergraduate students who are enrolled in a degree program during the 2006-2007 academic year may apply. The deadline for submitting proposals is Monday, Feb. 26.
