Student-staff collaboration addresses campus safety
A group of students and staff at the university has spent the fall semester working on the challenging task of improving campus safety, examining a wide variety of safety issues, including campus-area crime, late-night transportation, neighborhood watch programs, effective communication to students and emergency notifications.
Program trains school leaders with grassroots approach
Educational researchers on campus have closely examined successful schools with the aim of finding lessons for others. That examination led to the creation of a new cohort approach to the department's existing Ph.D. program, called the Wisconsin Idea Executive Ph.D. in Educational Leadership. The program's goal is to prepare educational leaders to dramatically improve public schools.
Dairy science reverses history with enrollment surge
This fall, 29 freshmen enrolled in the Department of Dairy Science, more than triple its entering class from just three years ago when the department launched a major overhaul, retooled its curriculum to be more hands-on and sharpened its focus on dairy management.

ESPN's Van Pelt to address midyear graduates
ESPN SportsCenter anchor Scott Van Pelt, who has declared Madison to be America's best college sports town, will deliver the charge to the graduates at the university's winter commencement ceremonies on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Kohl Center. He will speak at both the 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. ceremonies. Both ceremonies will be streamed live over the Web.
Cinematheque presents IFVC show
This 90-minute program highlights works produced in communication arts film and video production courses, as well as work by local filmmakers. 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, Cinematheque, 4070 Vilas.

The Annual Mustache Party presents Steez
Start growing those mustaches for this show because a grand prize will be presented to the winner. Mustaches aside, the highlight of the night will be Steez, a funky disco jam band from Madison that defines its style as "creepfunk." 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, Rathskeller, Memorial Union.

Last chance for drop-in flu shots at UHS
Students can still get a free shot from UHS, but starting in January, it will be necessary to make an appointment. Flu season typically does not peak until January or February, so it is still beneficial to get a shot. Walk-in flu shot clinic hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m., at University Health Services, 1552 University Ave.
GUTS hosts end-of-semester Study Day
The Greater University Tutoring Service's (GUTS) Drop-In Center will have tutors ready to provide last-minute help the day before finals begin. GUTS is providing help for these classes: math up to 632; economics up to 302; all Spanish and French classes; chemistry up to 345; physics up to 322; and psychology up to 202. 2-8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, Drop-In Center, first floor, College Library. Marching Band honored for philanthropy
The members of the UW Marching Band were honored as "Outstanding Young Philanthropists" at the 20th annual National Philanthropy Day celebration hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals at the Overture Center on Nov. 16.
Opportunities
Students, bookstores recycle books for community service
Campus volunteers are working with four independent bookstores and Dane Buy Local to help offset the costs of new texts for student organizations and college students in developing countries. To help, drop off extra books in the Green and White Better World Books boxes at the UW Bookstore, Underground Books, Rainbow Books Cooperative and Room of One's Own, all in downtown Madison.
Fellowships support undergraduate environmental research
Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowships and Holstrom Environmental Scholarships provide $4,000 to the student and $1,000 to the faculty/staff supervisor to help defray the costs of research. Applications are due Feb. 15, 2008.
Wisconsin Idea Fellowships jumpstart service-research projects
Wisconsin Idea Fellowships provide up to $3,000 to the student (up to $5,000 for a group project) for research-service projects involving community organizations under the supervision of a UW-Madison faculty or instructional academic staff member. Applications are due Feb. 15.
