Chancellor announces first Madison Initiative awards
Chancellor Biddy Martin and the Madison Initiative for Undergraduates Oversight Committee have identified eight proposals, ranging from an electronic system designed to capture notes of student meetings with advisers to College of Letters & Science faculty lines, to become the first recipients of funding from the innovative program.

Planning has begun for Go Big Read’s sophomore year, and nominations are now being accepted for next year’s book selection.
UW launches study of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans
A team of psychiatrists on campus and at the William S. Middleton Veterans’ Hospital in Madison has launched a large clinical study aimed at finding better treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder for veterans returning from Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Madison Initiative discussion set for Nov. 16
The Student Oversight Board for the Madison Initiative for Undergraduates will hold an open discussion session for those developing MIU proposals for the November deadline. The session will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, in the Student Activity Center, 333 East Campus Mall, fourth floor.

Campus Poetry Slam qualifiers are this weekend
Three days of slam poetry will determine who competes in the finals on Nov. 22. 7–9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, Electric Earth Cafe, 546 W. Washington Ave.; 7–9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, Fair Trade Coffee House, 418 State St.; and 7–9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, Play Circle Theater, Memorial Union.
Events planned for Global Entrepreneurship Week
UW–Madison — along with more than 1,000 organizations worldwide — will mark Global Entrepreneurship Week during the week of Nov. 15. Among the events is Kenny Dichter’s presentation, “The Original Bleacher Creature,” where Dichter will share how he turned his passion for sports into a successful venture at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, Heritage Hall, Camp Randall.
Portraits reveal stories behind Vietnam veteran experiences
An exhibit at the Chazen Museum of Art, “Back in the World: Portraits of Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans,” features large-format color portraits of veterans along with excerpts of interviews from a three-hour documentary being produced by Wisconsin Public Television. Today (Nov. 11) at 6 p.m., the Chazen will host a reception and panel discussion with some of the veterans featured in the exhibit and the documentary.
‘Wisconsin Singers on Campus’ offers rare opportunity
The Wisconsin Singers are a student-run entertainment company that performs for tens of thousands around the state and nation, and this performance is a rare chance for the campus to see what they are about. 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13 and 14, Wisconsin Union Theater. Cost: $22–20 general, $12–10 students and seniors.
Bringing ‘bioneers’ to Wisconsin
Bioneers, a leading-edge environmental movement that uses solutions inspired by nature and human ingenuity to support sustainable lifestyles and communities, will be introduced to Wisconsin at a conference in Fitchburg on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13 and 14.

Wisconsin Union Catering offers Thanksgiving-to-go dinners
Pre-cooked turkey, ham and vegetarian dinners with all the trimmings will be available to order from the Catering Division until Friday, Nov. 20. The order form with full menu and contact information for ordering by phone or e-mail is posted online, and orders can be picked up from noon-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25, in the Memorial Union’s Tripp Commons.
