WSUM starts a new era with move into University Square, open house

After years of a pillar-to-post existence and adapting to jerry-rigged spaces that were never intended to house a radio studio, WSUM-FM 91.7 has moved into shiny, new digs designed just for them at University Square, 333 East Campus Mall. The public is invited to celebrate student radio and see WSUM’s new location. Tours, giveaways, special guests and speakers, and light refreshments are planned. 4–7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, 333 East Campus Mall.

UW-Madison: Russell Athletic relationship will end

The university will end its business relationship with Russell Athletic at the expiration of its current licensing agreement in March. In late 2008, the university's Labor Licensing Policy Committee recommended that the university end its relationship with the firm after questions arose over the decision to close one of the company's factories in Honduras. Human and workers' rights groups have alleged that the closure took place as a result of union-organizing activity, and they cite additional claims that the factory management repeatedly sought to suppress freedoms of association there.

Wisconsin Partnership to join fight against silent tragedy

Earlier this decade, an African American baby born in Beloit, Kenosha, Milwaukee or Racine had worse odds for survival than a baby born in Jamaica, Sri Lanka or Central America. In 2004, Wisconsin had the worst African American infant mortality rate of 35 states that reported deaths by race. To address the problem, the Wisconsin Partnership's Oversight and Advisory Committee is committing up to $10 million in a long-term effort to improve the chances for Wisconsin's African American newborns.

UWPD warns of thefts

The UWPD is again warning students, faculty and staff not to leave valuables unattended in the wake of a recent string of thefts of audio-visual equipment and laptops. All are being encouraged to lock their office doors when they leave for any amount of time, and leave valuables at home or secured when not in use.

ASM holds open forum on vote for new ASM constitution

The Associated Students of Madison (ASM) will discuss its constitution at an open forum at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, TITU Memorial Union. ASM elections are Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 23-24. A referendum on the new constitution will be on the ballot. The discussion on Feb. 18 also will touch on issues such as using and distributing student segregated fees.

Social Work to launch part-time master's program next fall

In September, the School of Social Work will offer a part-time program designed to offer a master's program that can serve full-time employees, as well as others who are unable to pursue a full-time education, by offering Saturday classes throughout the year.

New Arts Venture Challenge awards student innovators

The New Arts Venture Challenge invited students from all departments to submit a written proposal for an arts event, exhibition, series or project. Four finalists were then notified and asked to give a presentation at the Arts Enterprise Symposium, held Jan. 30 and Feb. 1. When the judges couldn't decide on the second place winner of $500, one came forward and matched the prize to create an additional second place.

Chancellor delivers lecture for Focus on the Humanities series

For the first Focus on the Humanities lecture of the semester, Chancellor Carolyn "Biddy" Martin will discuss how aspects of the humanities have been viewed outside the university over the past couple of decades and reflect on how the value of humanities scholarship could be communicated to a larger audience. 5 p.m. today (Feb. 11), Pyle Center.

Third annual Wiscontrepreneur 100-Hour Challenge sparks student creativity

The 100-Hour Challenge returns for a third straight year and again encourages innovative students to imagine, visualize and create something of value in 100 hours. This year's challenge opens at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when participating students receive a $15 voucher to select materials from the Surplus With a Purpose (SWAP) shop in the basement of Sellery Hall. The SWAP "sale" will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on both Wednesday, Feb. 18, and Thursday, Feb. 19. Students then have until 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, to post a digital photo set, electronic slide set, video or other electronic communication of their creation on a publicly accessible Web site. Three winners will be selected and announced on March 2 in the categories of most creative, most monetary value generated and most social value generated.

Campus Poetry Slam to send winners to national competition

Attendees can hear the contestants or try to win a spot for themselves on Madison's slam poetry team. The winners of the Campus Poetry Slam will earn a spot on the regional slam team, which will compete in the National Poetry Slam, to be held later this year in Madison. 7-11 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, Play Circle Theater, Memorial Union.

WI-Global Forum discusses cultural purity in context of cultural globalization

The WI-Global Forum, created by and for UW-Madison undergraduates, is designed to discuss contemporary topics pertaining to globalization and their relevance for and impact on local communities. For this spring, the forum has taken up the theme cultural purity and winners and losers (if there are any) in the increasing interchange among peoples and cultures. Visit the forum to read posts or contribute to the discussion. Prizes will be awarded to selected participants.

UW-Madison receives national service award

For the second year in a row, the Corporation for National and Community Service has honored UW-Madison with a place on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to America's communities. Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a university can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.

Metro Route 80 Ends to Union South Feb. 15

Due to the Union South construction project, that block of West Johnson Street will permanently close. Evening trips via West Johnson past Union South end after the Sunday, Feb. 15, service day. Routes 82 and 85 will continue to serve the west campus area at stops along Campus Drive or Randall Avenue.

Friday, Feb. 13, is the last day for 50 percent tuition adjustment on dropped classes, the last day to apply for pass/fail, and the last day to convert from credit to audit for undergraduate, professional and special students.
