Famous political science alums praise the department

In the midst of the hotly contested midterm elections, some leading politicians from both ends of the political spectrum have come together on at least one issue: A UW-Madison political science degree is instrumental in their lives and public service careers. Several well-known political science graduates, including Vice President Dick Cheney, a Republican, and U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, a Democrat, contributed brief essays for the department's alumni newsletter focusing on what their UW-Madison education means to them.

Greek system takes back Langdon Street

In response to recent spikes in crime on campus and in the Langdon Street area, the Greek system has initiated a neighborhood-watch program designed to make the presence of the Greek system known in an area in which many of its residents reside. Launched last Friday, Nov. 3, members of fraternities and sororities now patrol Langdon Street from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. The neighborhood watch will be in effect every Friday and Saturday night for the rest of the academic year.

WSUM radio has a new home

WSUM, the university's student-run radio station - and its 150 student volunteers - are now part of the Life Sciences Communication program at the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Dean of Students hosts safety forum

Students who live off campus are invited to a special campus forum to discuss safety issues. The event is related to the string of downtown attacks and robberies earlier this fall. Hosted by the Offices of the Dean of Students and JSM Properties, the session will include short presentations by Madison and UW Police Departments and Associated Students of the Madison, as well as a listing of safety resources. 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, TITU Memorial Union.

Learn about stalking, other forms of violence

Stalking is a misunderstood and under-reported crime that occurs within our campus community more than we recognize. Attend this presentation by the Madison Police Department and the Office of Justice Assistance and learn to identify stalking behaviors, the impact they have on victims and victim resources. A discussion on dating and domestic violence and workplace violence will also be highlighted. 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16, in the On Wisconsin Room, Red Gym. Register online by Monday, Nov. 13.

Intramurals: 5-on-5 basketball

Entries are taken on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 14-15, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the SERF Program Office. The brackets are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, the entry fee is $20 per team, and play begins Sunday, Nov. 19. Divisions include men's, women's and co-recreational.
