UW-Madison swine flu updates: Stay informed and stay healthy
Although cases of H1N1 influenza -- or "swine flu" -- have been confirmed in Wisconsin, there are no changes to campus operations. Wash your hands, cover your cough and use good-sense health precautions to stay healthy.
Baseball commissioner to speak at spring commencement
Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan H. "Bud" Selig will deliver the charge to the graduates at each of the four spring commencement undergraduate ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17, at the Kohl Center.
UW-Madison announces book title for 'Go Big Read'
This fall, the university will launch "Go Big Read," a common reading program intended to engage students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members in a shared, academically focused reading experience. From a short list compiled by a review committee from the nearly 400 nominated titles, Chancellor Biddy Martin has selected "In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto," by Michael Pollan, as the book for the inaugural year.
Housing promotes awareness in light of burglary, trespassing
In light of the recent arrest of a trespassing individual in Witte Hall and an earlier burglary in Tripp Hall, the Housing Office is encouraging students to keep their doors locks and not let unauthorized people into residence halls.

Deadline pending in Convocation essay contest
UW-Madison invites students to write an essay about the things they’ve learned about life at the university. The winner will be given the honor of addressing 5,500 new students from the floor of the Kohl Center at the Chancellor's Convocation for New Students on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The winner will also receive a $100 gift certificate to University Book Store. The submission deadline is Friday, May 8.
IMHO selected as university's featured show on BTN
IMHO, or In My Humble Opinion, has been selected as the featured show to be spotlighted during UW-Madison's academic programming block this summer on the Big Ten Network. Every Tuesday at 8 p.m., viewers can tune in to this talk show, which features an ensemble of UW-Madison undergraduates talking about real issues that affect students today.
UHS to offer 'pet therapy,' other stress-reduction services
As students hit the libraries to prepare for final exams, research papers and presentations, the University Health Services "Counseling Canines" are headed back to Library Mall for the annual Pet Therapy study break.
Report gauges nature and extent of poverty statewide
The first-ever Wisconsin Poverty Report finds that nearly 11 percent of Wisconsin's population and one in seven children lived in poverty in 2007 and that the need for food has grown substantially as the recession deepened in the last two years.

The seventh episode of “Office Hours,” a half-hour weekly talk show on the Big Ten Network, brings nationally recognized experts from the UW-Madison campus together in a discussion of President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office.

The Offices of the Dean of Students will remember UW-Madison students who passed away during the 2008-09 academic year during a brief ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the Carillon Tower.
Student fashion show presents 'A Visual Progression of Design'
View stunning fashion designs at the School of Human Ecology's student fashion show, Flux: A Visual Progression of Design. Shows will be held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. A gallery display will be will be open for an hour before and after each performance. Alumni and friends are encouraged to attend the second show, which will be followed by a reception. This event is organized by the Textile and Apparel Students Association and Retail Club and supported by Kohl's Department Stores. Saturday, May 9, Monona Terrace, 1 John Nolen Drive. Cost: $10 for the 2 p.m. show, $25 for 7 p.m.
The Black Jew Dialogues: A Multimedia Comedy Experience
The Multicultural Student Center, Wisconsin Black Student Union and UW Hillel Foundation invite the campus to enjoy a free multimedia evening with this Boston-based, internationally acclaimed comedy show. The Black Jew Dialogues combines fast-paced sketches, improvisations and multimedia to create a show that has gained praise across the United States and the U.K. 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, Auditorium, Wisconsin Historical Society.
Cinematheque's 'Comix to Comix' series screens 'Crumb'
This documentary is not so much about the artist Crumb as it is about the man and his brothers. A deeply personal exploration of the aftermath of the Crumb boys' abusive childhood, "Crumb" is about mental illness, coping mechanisms and, yes, comix. At times very funny and at others deeply sad, the story not only casts light on the inspiration and motivation behind R. Crumb's work, it also introduces audiences to the work of his brothers. 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 8, Cinematheque, 4070 Vilas.
Ongoing celebration marks opening of UW-Madison's Art Lofts facility
The community is celebrating the opening of the Art Lofts with a series of events this week through Saturday, May 9, all free and open to the public. The events include tours, demonstrations and student art sales from 1:30-5 p.m. on Wednesday (today), May 6, and from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 9. The new state-of-the-art facility for the Department of Art now houses the department's glass lab, metal sculpture foundry, ceramics, graduate darkroom and digital facilities, and papermaking areas, along with studio spaces for more than 60 faculty and graduate students, and spaces for the display of student and faculty artwork.
