Afternoon, evening classes cancelled
In light of deteriorating weather and road conditions, UW-Madison will cancel all afternoon and evening classes at 3:30 p.m., Provost Patrick Farrell has announced.
Madison declares snow emergency
The City of Madison has declared a snow emergency. That means that alternate side parking restrictions will be in effect throughout the entire City of Madison including the downtown/isthmus snow emergency zone.
Students choose service over sun on Alternative Breaks
Since 1990, students have abandoned the luxury of sandy beaches to travel across the country and volunteer during their precious week of spring break. This semester, Alternative Breaks has 12 trips going everywhere from a wet shelter in Boston to the devastation in New Orleans to the Everglades in Florida. The deadline for applying is noon on Friday, Feb. 8.

'Think Pink' against Ohio State and battle cancer
The Wisconsin women's basketball team will 'Think Pink' when it meets No. 19 and league-leading Ohio State on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 3:30 p.m. CT at the Kohl Center, and Badger fans are encouraged to 'Think Pink' too by wearing pink to support of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's campaign to raise awareness for breast cancer. Fans who wear pink to the game will receive discounted tickets, $3 for adults and $1 for youth/student/seniors.

Student recognized for work on 'Miss. Burning' case
In the summer of 1964, former UW-Madison student Andrew Goodman and two other college students were murdered as they worked to ensure voter registration for African Americans in Mississippi, and sophomore Brittany Saltiel and her collaborators will appear on "The Montel Williams Show" Thursday, Feb. 7, to discuss a documentary they made in high school that included a new, revealing interview of one of the suspects, bringing new attention to the case from the law.
New Chadbourne food venue features kosher offerings
Along with a rotisserie oven, flat-top Mongolian grill, open-flame barbecue and popular homemade pizza baked on site, the new marketplace-style venue "Rheta's" features a brand-new feature for UW-Madison: a kosher station, with all kosher foods prepared on site in a newly constructed kitchen that is supervised by a Mashgiach.
Political scientist named to polling panel
Unraveling the mystery behind why pre-election polls in the New Hampshire presidential primary were so dramatically off target is the mission of a select panel that includes Charles Franklin, a nationally known polling expert in the political science department.

Cinematheque begins semester of rarely seen films

Undergraduate inventors to compete during Innovation Days
Coming soon to campus: new solutions for ice fishermen, potato farmers, tailgaters, laptop junkies and airlines, all invented by undergraduates. Designed and built by 49 UW-Madison undergraduate students, 14 inventions will debut at the annual Innovation Days competitions, to be held Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 11 and 12, in Engineering Hall, 1415 Engineering Dr.
Annual symposium celebrates Darwin's birthday
Darwin Day will feature three fascinating morning talks by eminent scholars and interactive afternoon displays showing the importance of evolution. The all-day event starts starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Microbial Sciences Building and continues in Weeks Hall and the Geology Museum after lunch.
Book series features human rights around the world
Celebrating the contributions that UW-Madison faculty bring to the study of human rights, this semester's International Institute book series offers diverse perspectives to shed light on these complex issues. The first event is Tuesday, Feb. 12, when Gay Seidman, sociology, will discuss his book "Beyond the Boycott: Labor Rights, Human Rights and Transnational Activism." All the talks take place at 7 p.m. at the University Book Store in the Hilldale Mall, 702 N. Midvale Blvd.
Professor to perform all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas
Rare is the pianist who accepts the challenge of learning all 32 piano sonatas by Beethoven. Rarer still is the keyboard virtuoso who decides to perform all of them in public, from memory, over the course of little more than two months. But that is what Christopher Taylor, School of Music, has planned to keep himself occupied this spring, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities.

Friday, Feb. 8, is the last day for students to pay tuition and fees without paying a $100 fee for late payments.
