Like junkies without drugs, mice without running wheels crave what they lack, suggesting that some animals can develop an addiction for exercise, report scientists in the Dec. 1 issue of the journal Behavioral Neuroscience.

New 'knight' champions Dutch language, culture
Over the years, R. Byron Bird, professor emeritus of chemical and biological engineering, has promoted Dutch language and culture. He became smitten with the country and its people while on a Fulbright fellowship in Amsterdam in 1950. The Netherlands honored him for his efforts earlier this year.

Annual Forestry Club tree sale begins Friday
The annual Forestry Club Christmas tree sale will be held at the Stock Pavilion, Friday, Dec. 5, 8 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 6, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 7, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Horn choir concert to enhance holiday season
The ancient tradition of the horn ensemble, dating back hundreds of years from French and Austrian hunt clubs, is finding new expression among a group of students at UW-Madison. The Horn Choir performs 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, in the Elvehjem Museum of Art.

College of Letters & Science graduates, their families and friends are invited to a reception at 12:30 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 21, in the Kohl Center's Nicholas Johnson Pavilion. Request Music City Bowl tickets Dec. 9-10
Student football season ticket holders may make requests for Music City Bowl tickets Dec. 9-10, until 4:30 p.m., via uwbadgers.com or in person at the Athletic Ticket Office at gate B of the Kohl Center. If necessary a lottery will be run on Dec. 11 to determine which ticket requests are filled. A credit card must be used to place a request; all filled requests will be charged. Notification will be sent by e-mail notifying individuals of the outcome of ticket requests.

Charter Street project to start this week
The construction project on Charter Street between Linden Drive and University Avenue is expected to get underway this week. Motorists, motorcyclists, moped drivers and bicyclists should look for traffic control measures, and be prepared to use alternate routes.

Volleyball team heads to NCAA tourney
Wisconsin travels to College Station, Texas, on Friday and Saturday for first and second-round matches of the 2003 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. The Badgers (21-10) take on 21st-ranked Arizona (17-14) in first-round action on Friday at 5 p.m.

Relieve pre-finals stress with help from the CIVC
The Campus Information and Visitor Center is hosting a series of events and activities next week, Dec. 8-12, to help students relieve stress before finals begin. Events include massage and stress-reduction workshops, exam preparation sessions, screenings of Disney movies and exercise classes.

Scholarship opportunities for undergraduates
Wisconsin Hilldale Fellowships and Holstrom Environmental Scholarships, for those with at least junior standing, provide opportunities for undergraduates to participate in collaborative research with faculty or staff. The awards provide a grant of $4,000 to the student, plus $1,000 to the faculty/staff supervisor. The Holstrom scholarships require an environmental focus. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 6.
