Joseph Salmons has always been struck by the pervasiveness of the argument. In his visits across Wisconsin, in many newspaper letters to the editor, and in the national debates raging over modern immigration, he encounters the same refrain:
- Notable graduates: Ryosuke Shibuya — Breaking through language barriers May 13, 2008 When Ryosuke Shibuya came to Madison in 2002, he had more of an adjustment to make than the average freshmen. Arriving from his home country of Japan, Shibuya did not speak any English. Six years later, he's graduating with a degree in history.
- World Languages Day to draw 700-plus students from across Wisconsin April 7, 2008 It's a rite of passage each spring for thousands of state high school students - heading to Madison for basketball, hockey and wrestling tournaments and a taste of the city, the university and a day or two out of school. - Miernowski wins national online education award Sept. 7, 2007 The 2007 "R1edu Award" for Distinguished Faculty Contributions to Online Learning has been presented to Professor Jan Miernowski of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
- World Languages Day brings the world to Wisconsin April 12, 2007 On Thursday, April 19, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Language Institute will host over 700 high school students and their teachers for World Languages Day, an all-day event that aims to raise awareness of diverse languages and cultures in Wisconsin and around the world.
- World Cinema Day connects Wisconsin high school students to the world April 9, 2007 Several hundred Wisconsin high school students and teachers will be in Madison April 13, 2007 to participate in World Cinema Day. World Cinema Day is an outreach program of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Language Institute and Arts Institute, presented in conjunction with the Wisconsin Film Festival.
- UW-Madison receives grant for Central Asian Turkic languages Feb. 20, 2007 The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Language Institute $379,000 to support the Central Asian Interactive Listening Series project.
