• Thomas Hoover, former registrar, dies at 92 Dec. 15, 2011 Co-workers remembered former University of Wisconsin–Madison registrar Thomas Hoover as a kind and cheery fellow who loved the outdoors and Gummi bears.
• Pioneering molecular biologist, formerly at UW–Madison, passes away Dec. 5, 2011 Masayasu Nomura, a molecular biologist who studied the structure that forms proteins inside cells at University of Wisconsin–Madison between 1963 and 1984, passed away on Nov. 19 at age 84 in California.
• Biochemist Har Gobind Khorana, whose UW work earned the Nobel Prize, dies Nov. 11, 2011 Biochemist Har Gobind Khorana, who received the Nobel Prize for research he conducted while at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, died Wednesday, Nov. 9 in Concord, Mass. at age 89.
• Torphy memorial scheduled for Nov. 10 Nov. 1, 2011 A memorial event has been scheduled for the late John Torphy, former UW–Madison vice chancellor for administration. It will be held Thursday, Nov. 10 from 3-6 p.m. in Great Hall of the Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St., Madison.
• Gregory Hedden explored the possibilities of sustainable mining in the Great Lakes Oct. 25, 2011 Gregory Dexter Hedden, with the Wisconsin Sea Grant College Program, provided advisory and technical support to the nascent Great Lakes mining industry spawned by those discoveries. Hedden died on Monday, Oct. 17, in Madison at age 92.
• John Torphy, former vice chancellor, passes away Oct. 4, 2011 Former UW–Madison Vice Chancellor for Administration John Torphy, a long-time state and university official known for his brilliant mastery of budget issues, died in Tucson, Ariz. on Sunday, Oct. 2.
• Bone marrow transplant pioneer dies at 77 Aug. 17, 2011 Dr. Fritz Bach, a former University of Wisconsin-Madison researcher and physician who pioneered the use of bone-marrow transplants, died Sunday at the age of 77.
• Former housing chief Newell J. Smith dies at 93 Aug. 10, 2011 Newell J. Smith, director of University Housing for 41 years and the namesake of a University of Wisconsin-Madison residence hall, passed away on Friday, Aug. 5. He was 93.
