- Guest Artist Series features accomplished alumni Jan. 28, 2009 The Guest Artist Series presents soprano Karen Caballero and pianist David Collins at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8, in Mills Hall. Both artists are alumni of the School of Music: Caballero received the Bachelor of Music degree in 2001 before earning a master’s degree and graduate diploma at the New England Conservatory of Music.

But music professor Susan Cook says her new class takes a broad view of both music and ethnicity, diving into the use of music in ethnic settlements in Wisconsin since the 1800s, such as the Swiss in New Glarus and Germans in Milwaukee. She will also explore the musical traditions of Native Americans and recent Hmong immigrants.

When Martha Glowacki asked rural sociologist Michael Bell to offer commentary about "Wisconsin's People on the Land," the art exhibition she co-curated for the Wisconsin Academy's James Watrous Gallery, she thought he might say something about the state's rural roots or its long history with agriculture.
