As biology booms, students flock to the lab

Since the mid-1990s, UW-Madison has experienced a surge of interest in biology, a phenomenon that has challenged the folks who run UW-Madison's biggest portal to this hot field: Introductory Biology 151 and 152 in the College of Letters and Science.
- Fellows program gives undergraduates chance to lead May 13, 2009 Even some of the most dedicated students scour the schedule of classes for ways to make their Fridays a quick day. But every Friday afternoon, Jenny Saffran’s Undergraduate Teaching Fellows meet to discuss their progress in that week’s section, and their lesson plans for next week.
- Annual symposium focuses on student learning, new ideas May 13, 2009 Faculty and staff dedicate the entire year to teaching eager students, but on May 20–22, they will gather to teach other teachers.

- Curiosity blossoms into graduate career May 6, 2009 Lynn Gilbertson, a first-year Ph.D. student in communicative disorders, has long had a deep curiosity about autism spectrum disorder, a condition that one in 150 U.S. children now have, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. First as a UW-Madison undergraduate and now as a doctoral student, she's been studying what types of sounds autistic children respond favorably to.
- Fashion design students put on the glitz May 6, 2009 Madison will get its own version of “Project Runway” at the School of Human Ecology’s student fashion show to be held Saturday, May 9, at the Monona Terrace Convention Center, 1 John Nolen Drive.
- Course adds to environmental awareness April 22, 2009 Ph.D. student in literary studies Todd Goddard has found a way to unite his concern for the environment with his teaching. In his section of English 201, he provides 16 students with real-world communications experience while giving 11 local nonprofits some much-needed help. In the process, he helps increase environmental awareness among his students and the audiences they serve.

- Entomology department’s centennial celebration features butterfly exhibit March 30, 2009 To help celebrate its 100th year, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Entomology is inviting the public to get up close and personal with members of the wide world of insects.

‘Great Texts’ exposes high-schoolers to literature

High school students in Wisconsin are digging into great world literature that would bewilder older and more experienced readers: “Don Quixote,” by Miguel de Cervantes, “Dante’s Inferno,” by Dante Alighieri, “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and “The Brothers Karamazov,” by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. All the students need is a chance to try and the right guidance from their teachers. Both of these necessities are provided by the Center for the Humanities.
- Cinema Day highlights German, Iranian cultures March 25, 2009 On Friday, April 3, Wisconsin high school students and teachers will participate in World Cinema Day, with an educational screening of “Football Under Cover,”, a film that documents the efforts of both the Iranian and German teams to cross cultural and national borders to play the match of a lifetime.
- UW School of Medicine and Public Health sets school record for residency placement March 20, 2009 With a record-high rate of graduating medical students matching into their desired residency on March 19, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health leaders are cheering another highlight: More students are choosing to stay in the state for their residency training and about 40 percent plan to pursue a residency in primary care – where physicians nationwide are badly needed.

- School of Social Work plans to launch part-time master’s program next fall March 5, 2009 In September, the School of Social Work will offer a part-time master of social work program.
- Japanese public TV films Innovation Day inventors at UW-Madison Feb. 24, 2009 A film crew representing a Japanese public broadcast station will be on the College of Engineering campus on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 26-27, to interview participants from Innovation Day, the University of Wisconsin-Madison's annual invention competition.
