Performance Center to get $20 million boost

Two anonymous donors have made a commitment of $20 million in support of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music's future Performance Center on the northwest corner of University Avenue and Lake Street.

- Seven honored with Romnes awards March 18, 2008 Seven of UW–Madison’s rising faculty have received H.I. Romnes Faculty Fellowships. The award, supported by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), recognizes great potential in faculty who have earned tenure within the last four years. Award-winners receive a $50,000 award to be used in support of research.
- Martinů expert Aleš Březina to visit Madison March 3, 2008 Aleš Březina, a Prague-based musicologist, composer and film collaborator, will visit the University of Wisconsin-Madison Wednesday-Sunday, April 23-27.
- Hot subjects—Music 319: Musical Ethnicities of Wisconsin Feb. 12, 2008 Most students are surprised to find on the timetable that a Wisconsin-focused class could fulfill their ethnic studies requirement. But music professor Susan Cook says her new class takes a broad view of both music and ethnicity, diving into the use of music in ethnic settlements in Wisconsin since the 1800s, such as the Swiss in New Glarus and Germans in Milwaukee. She will also explore the musical traditions of Native Americans and recent Hmong immigrants.

- Playing double: A UW pianist gets hands-on with a unique instrument Feb. 5, 2008 Christopher Taylor has two pianos in his campus studio. One has eighty-eight keys; the other has almost twice that many. Taylor, an assistant professor of music, is the unofficial keeper of a double-keyboard Steinway.
- Gifts establish ‘best ever’ UW-Madison music scholarships Dec. 18, 2007 Glen A. Skillrud and Winifred Skillrud of San Antonio, Texas, have made gifts to establish what are being called the two best undergraduate scholarships in the history of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music.

- ‘World-class’ UW violinist Vartan Manoogian dies July 13, 2007 Vartan Manoogian, professor of violin at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music, died on Thursday, July 12, in Spain. He was 71.
