State Street construction

Construction on the State Street Mall project — shown here along State Street — will force the closure of North Park Street to through traffic at the base of Bascom Hill.

As part of the State Street-Library Mall construction project, North Park Street will be closed to through traffic at State Street.

The sidewalk on the east side of Park Street will remain open for pedestrian traffic. The project and closure is expected to last through August.

The project will make the area more user friendly and includes a new design featuring trees and landscaping, new seating areas, a raised pedestrian crosswalk at North Park Street and areas that can be used as gathering places.

The two-block area will also be given new lighting and will accommodate utility improvements. More information on the final design plan can be found here.

The pedestrian overpass at North Park Street will remain open, but there will be a detour for pedestrians coming from the west, down Bascom Hill, directing them south around Music Hall. There will be construction near the bottom or west end of the bridge where it connects to Bascom Hill. Pedestrians coming from the east and the Humanities Building side will also need to be detoured around the construction.

Pedestrians will also be detoured on the north sidewalk of Bascom Hill, toward Science Hall, as the construction project removes the existing stairs at the bottom of the hill and redirects traffic onto the new stairs in the middle of the hill.
