Six appointed to WARF professorships

Six members of the University of Wisconsin–Madison faculty have been appointed to Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation named professorships in 2014.

The appointments, which include $75,000 in research support from WARF over five years, are:

David Beebe, Claude Bernard Professor of Biomedical Engineering, who leads the Microtechnology, Medicine and Biology Lab in applying micro-scale physics to cancer and global health problems.

Russell Castronovo, Tom Paine Professor of English, who studies the public and political significance of American literature from the pamphlets of the American Revolution to early 20th-century anarchist manifestos.

Nancy P. Keller, Robert L. Metzenberg and Kenneth B. Raper Professor of Mycology, whose research is on the genetic regulation of metabolism and fungal development, focusing on the virulence of the human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus.

Ronald Raines, Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Biology, has produced an enzyme in clinical trials as an anti-cancer agent, created stable synthetic collagens and devised chemical processes to convert biomass into refined fuels and chemicals.

Mary Louise Roberts, Lucie Aubrac Professor of History, who specializes in World War II, France and women and gender. She has published several books, most recently 2014’s “D-Day Through French Eyes.”

Robert Staiger, James Meade Professor of Economics, who studies international trade policy, rules and institutions — in particular the economics of the World Trade Organization and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.
