“I would like to congratulate Ray Cross on his selection as the next president of the University of Wisconsin System.

“Since coming to UW–Madison in July, I have had the opportunity to get to know Ray as a person, as well as working with him in his capacity as chancellor of UW Colleges and UW-Extension.

“His warmth, energy and innovative thinking are apparent to all who know him. These qualities will serve him well as System president.

“During the search process, Ray stressed his desire to build relationships and trust with lawmakers and the citizens of Wisconsin through a commitment to openness and transparency. This has also been an emphasis of mine since arriving on campus.

“I am confident that Ray has the skills and the drive to succeed in his approach. I know that he has already earned the respect of the regents, legislators and colleagues he has worked with on important higher education initiatives. He understands UW–Madison, along with the diverse group of institutions he will manage.

“Ray and I are both believers in the power of systems generally and the UW System in particular. I look forward to working with him in his new role.”
