Parent Notice: Langdon Street Incident

UW-Madison Parents,

You may have heard from your student about an off-campus crime incident that took place on Wednesday evening. We wanted to share with you the most up-to-date information from campus, including a message that was sent to your student from UWPD.

Fortunately, no one was hurt and there is no ongoing danger to the campus community.

As a parent, you can be helpful in a situation like this by talking with your student about a continued focus on personal safety, both on campus and off.

Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in WiscAlerts text messaging at http://go.wisc.edu/wiscalerts. Parent Notices, like this one, will be sent to you in the event of a serious incident.

In general, students are advised to:

-- Never walk alone, particularly at night.

-- Carry a cell phone and dial 911 for help.

-- Lock their doors and windows, even when they are home.

-- Not to let strangers into their apartments or residence halls.

-- To give up property when confronted by an individual with a weapon.

-- To avoid propping open exterior doors, and buzzing people they don’t know into a building.

-- To be wary of people who don’t appear to belong in the area.

Update on Langdon Street situation

Around 6:27 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, UWPD received reports of shots fired in the 100 block of Langdon Street near campus in downtown Madison. UWPD responded along with Madison Police.

UWPD notified the campus community through a series of WiscAlerts text messages, emails, web and social media posts, beginning at 6:32 p.m.

A suspect was initially believed to be headed west down the Lakeshore Path.

A person of interest matching the suspect description was detained at 6:42 p.m. by UWPD.

A thorough search of campus from Lake Street to Lot 34 along the lakefront was conducted.

No one was injured, and as of 8:50 p.m. there is believed to be no ongoing danger to the campus community. A series of all-clear WiscAlerts was sent.

UWPD and Madison Police continue to investigate the situation.
