Your top 10 Inside UW-Madison stories of the semester

December 15, 2011 By John Lucas

Update: Two stories from the Dec. 15 iUW have also pushed into the top 10: Has there ever been a semester without a major snowstorm? (now at #2) and 2011 Photographer’s Choice slideshow at #7).

Inside UW–Madison, UW–Madison’s new faculty and staff e-newsletter, has been publishing twice weekly since Aug. 23.

During that time, campus has seen a new Rhodes Scholar, a return to the Rose Bowl, additional budget cuts and a continuing progression of new construction and buildings.

We’ve been keeping a running list of our most popular stories, ranked by Inside UW–Madison clicks. They are listed below:

#1: Memorial Union set to undergo renovations, upgrades: The unveiling of a new plan to rebuild and renovate Memorial Union and the Union Theater would be one of the biggest stories of any year.

#2: Jobs’ biological father wants to meet him: This story, originally published in the Toronto Star, details a surprising fact – Apple founder Steve Jobs’ biological parents met at UW–Madison.

#3: Tombstone mystery solved: Two graves are located on Bascom Hill, and one of the tombstones is (somehow) located in a near west side back yard.

#4: UW–Madison among top 10 public universities in 2012 U.S. News rankings: UW–Madison continues its long string of rankings successes.

#5: UW undergraduate Alexis Brown named Rhodes Scholar: Brown is the first UW student to win the most coveted award in higher education since 2000.

#6: Why does the semester start when it does? Why would campus hold one day of class on a Friday, before taking off for a long weekend? We found the answer.

#7: Winter biking: Tips for pedaling through snow and slush: Though biking to campus can be more pleasant in the spring, summer and fall, a group of dedicated riders shows it can be done year around.

#8: Taking The High View I (aerial photo slideshow): Two University Communications photographers detailed campus beauty and construction from a helicopter this fall.

#9: New deli food options tantalize tastebuds: Ever wonder who chooses menu options for campus delis? Much planning and thought goes into Union food service.

#10: Tick-tock: Campus clocks set to fall back: Who sets back thousands of campus clocks for a time change?

Inside UW continues to encourage your ideas for stories and provide an outlet for your thoughts and comments in our Interact section.
