Seminars cover financial-coping strategies for employees

September 1, 2011 By John Lucas

Resources are available for faculty and staff who may be dealing with difficulties related to increased health care and benefit costs and the associated decrease in take-home pay.

State Group Health Insurance premiums and contributions to the Wisconsin Retirement System increased with the check payable Aug. 25 for classified employees (paid biweekly) and Sept. 1 for unclassified employees (paid monthly).

Visit the Office of Human Resources Payroll and Benefits Services for more information.

The Employee Assistance Office and the Office of Human Resource Development (OHRD) are also hosting a program called “Financial Strategies When Your Income Drops.”

The presentations, scheduled from 10:30 a.m.-noon on Monday, Sept. 19, at Union South; from 1:30-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Memorial Union; and from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, in Union South will provide tools and tips for employees to manage their finances when they are confronted with a drop in income.

Attendees will learn strategies of how to set realistic goals and formulate new spending plans by re-evaluating their financial situations.

Sessions are free, but registration is required. A Spanish interpreter will attend on Sept. 19, and a Tibetan interpreter will be present on Sept. 27.

Deb Neubauer of the financial education center through UW-Extension will lead the sessions.

Employees are able to attend this presentation during work time. If employees are unable to attend, the session is archived to view at any time by visiting “Financial Strategies When Your Income Drops,” by clicking here.

Employees are encouraged to attend if they are concerned or stressed, says Christine Willard-Waldo, office manager at the Employee Assistance Office. “Many employees find it hard to makes ends meet and hopefully this presentation gives them some ideas and tools to make things easier,” she says.

To register for the seminar, visit the OHRD site.
