L&S announces annual awards

Gary Sandefur, dean of the College of Letters and Science, has announced the winners of the 2005-06 College of Letters and Science Academic Staff Excellence Awards, Advising Awards and Classified Staff Excellence Awards.

These awards are given to recognize the contributions of L&S academic staff and classified staff to the college. The recipients will be honored at an awards ceremony on Friday, April 21, in the Howard Auditorium of the Fluno Center.

The recipient of the Early Career Award is Melissa Tedrowe in the Department of English. In this category, the academic staff member has been in the college for three to eight years, has a record that demonstrates outstanding performance in one’s position, shows substantial promise of future contributions and demonstrates a high degree of professionalism.

The Mid-Career Achievement Award goes to three people this year. They are Gloria Mari Beffa, Department of Mathematics; Merritt Dietz, Department of French and Italian; and Paul Hanson, Center for Limnology. In this category, the academic staff member has been in the College of Letters and Science for seven or more years, demonstrates outstanding performance, leadership and service beyond one’s position, and shows substantial professional competency and the promise of continuing contributions.

The Judith S. Craig Distinguished Service Award goes to Catherine H. Middlecamp, Department of Chemistry. In this category, the recipient must be an L&S academic staff member for 15 or more years. The recipient has a record that demonstrates outstanding service and professionalism to the college and the university throughout one’s career.

Academic Advising awards go to advisers who show exemplary practices in advising students, who develop student potential, contribute beyond the call of duty, work across school and college lines to serve the needs of students, and contribute to the improvement of advising services for students. The faculty recipient is Andrew Irving, of the Department of French and Italian, and the academic staff recipient is Ellen Jacobson, of the Department of Sociology.

L&S Classified Staff Excellence Awards go to classified staff who have shown outstanding work performance and/or have made a significant impact in terms of the overall value and benefit to specific program goals or to the university. They consistently demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and initiative, and provide a positive contribution to the climate of the unit, college or university as a whole.

This year’s recipients are Cheryl Arn, of the Department of French and Italian; Mary Barber, of the Department of English; Ron Brockman, of SAA Cross College Advising; Jefferson Burkett, of the Department of Chemistry; and Jane Williams, of the Department of History.
