Donald R. Johnson, professor emeritus of <a href="http://www.aos.wisc.edu/">atmospheric and oceanic sciences</a>, has been recognized with a national award for his years of excellence in teaching and mentoring students. The <a href="http://www.ametsoc.org/">American Meteorological Society</a> honored Johnson with the 2005 Teaching Excellence Award, given annually to an individual in recognition of sustained outstanding teaching and mentoring of under- graduate or graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic and related sciences. Johnson began teaching at the UW in 1965; former students include many active and influential members of the atmospheric science community. He also is special projects scientist for the <a href="http://www.nws.noaa.gov/">National Weather Service</a> and director of Earth Sciences for the <a href="http://www.usra.edu/">Universities Space Research Association</a> in Columbia, Maryland. He is a fellow of AMS and the <a href="http://www.aaas.org/">American Association for the Advancement of Science</a>. The award was presented during the AMS annual meeting in San Diego. Donald R.
